About EGERIA > Why the name Egeria?

egeriaA lot of people ask where the name Egeria comes from. In fact, Egeria was a real person - a woman traveler in the fourth century. You can read more about her on our "Who was Egeria" page.

Egeria Orthodox Home exchange is named for for the pilgrim Egeria for a number of reasons. First, her name evokes a spirit of adventure and freshness. In her time Christianity had only recently been made legal by Emperor Constantine (313 AD), and reading her account of her journey it is clear that she was full of wonder at what she was able to see, and participate in, so far away from home.

Secondly, there is the affinity that I feel for Egeria as a fellow Orthodox Christian woman, and a lover of travel and learning!

Oh, and the pronunciation. eh-JEER-ee-ah. It sort of rhymes with Nigeria (in English, anyway!).
