Region Description

Located halfway between New Delhi and Calcutta, “Kāśī” (“luminous”) is the city’s oldest moniker, first associated with the kingdom of the same name three thousand years ago. “Varanasi” is another designation, found in the Jātaka tales and in the epic Mahābhārata, and indeed today, Varanasi is the city’s revived, post-Independence designation. The city was identified in the Pali language as Bārāṇasi, from which emerged the corruption “Banaras,” by which the city is still most widely known. The Banaras region is a geographical and socio-cultural designation encompassing the broader area and peoples living in and around the more limited territory lying between the Varanā and Asi Rivers. Sarnath is a mere ten kilometers away. This is the place where Buddha gave his first teaching. Today it is a center of Buddhist activity and is much more relaxed than its nearby Hindu cousin.

About Us

Who We Are

We are thirty-somethings with two daughters now living in India. So life is quite an adventure.

Languages Spoken

English, Hindi, some French

Interests, Hobbies

We enjoy traveling and did it much more BK (Before Kids). We also enjoy Geeking out to Lord of the Rings movies. Now that we are in the “East” we wouldn’t mind taking advantage of proximities closer to India.

Lifestyle, lifestyle

We have two young children, age 4.5 and 2, so life is hectic. Kerry is doing his dissertation research and Sheri is watching the kids most of the time. Our time in Banaras is supplemented by music and dance lessons, Hindi lessons, and boat outings on the Ganga.
